WHO SWEATS (AND WHO DOESN'T)?!

COINING THE CHURCHILL DOWNS PHRASE - "THEY'RE OFF"!  THE RACES HAVE STARTED.  VEGAS SHOULD GET INVOLVED AND GIVE US THE LINE(S) ON HOW MUCH MONEY WILL BE SPENT.

THE MAYORAL RACE PROBABLY WILL SEEM RATHER TAME COMPARED TO THE COUNCIL RACES.

THE 4TH DISTRICT RECEIVED A BYE UNTIL AFTER THE PRIMARY.  MONEY WILL BE SAVED AND WE'RE BETTING PAT HAS STOPPED SWEATING (AT LEAST UNTIL AFTER THE PRIMARY).

THE 1ST DISTRICT WILL BE A HORSE RACE.  DAN SHOULD BE AWARE HIS WORDS ARE REACHING OUR EARS FASTER THAN THE NEIGHS BEING BELLOWED AT THE BARN.  THE DEAL CUTTING IS AT AN END, DAN.  NO DEALS.  YOUR HORSE HAS BECOME LAME AND PROBABLY WON'T START THE RACE, MUCH LESS FINISH.

NO BLINDERS OR LASIX WILL BE NEEDED FOR THE 3RD DISTRICT.  THE HORSES ARE IN GOOD SHAPE AND GOOD ODDS SHOULD BE AVAILABLE FOR THE AVERAGE BETTOR (VOTER, I MEAN).  SAY WHAT YOU WILL IN HANDICAPPING THIS RACE (KEEP IT CLEAN) BUT OUR VOTE LIES WITH STEVE PRICE.

WE ALSO DO NOT FEEL THE PEDIGREE OF THE FILLY NAMED BENEDETTI WILL CARRY THE HORSE PAST THE BOYS AT THE FINISH LINE.  TOO MUCH WEIGHT (OR BAGGAGE WE SHOULD SAY).

THE OTHER RACE WE WILL WATCH CAREFULLY WILL BE THE AT-LARGE RACE.  WE FEEL THERE IS SO MUCH HORSE CRAP IN THE WAY OF THE STARTING LINE THERE WILL NEED TO BE MANY PEOPLE WITH SHOVELS EMPLOYED IN ORDER TO MOVE THE CRAP OUT OF THE WAY TO EVEN GET THIS RACE STARTED.

IS THIS THE BEGINNING OF THE END OF WHAT HAS BEEN GOING ON IN THIS TOWN FOR TOO LONG?  WE SMELL THE SWEAT, THE FEAR, THE TEARS, AND THE RHETORIC WHICH IS GETTING READY TO RAIN DOWN ON THE TRACK.  OUR BET WILL HAVE TO GO TO THE MUDDERS.

WE AREN'T HAPPY WITH ANY OF THE CHOICES FOR CITY CLERK.  THIS RACE MAY BE A DEAD HEAT.

ARE THERE ANY BOOKIES OUT THERE?  WE WOULD RATHER PUT OUR MONEY WITH THEM RATHER THAN BEHIND SOME OF THESE CANDIDATES.

WE TRUST THE TRIBUNE AND THE COURIER-JOURNAL WILL GIVE US FAIR AND UNBIASED REPORTING REGARDING THE LINES, PEDIGREES, PLATFORMS, ISSUES, AND OWNERS THESE HORSES ARE REPRESENTING.

AS THEY SAY IN MAY AT CHURCHILL - THEY ARE OFF!

Seems like the CJ is only interested in a few of the races. Is that fair to the other candidates.

I also feel like the Tribune is already showing certain candidates free exposure.

Will this be a nasty election?

Put your ear to the ground it has already started.

It seems to me that the C-J coverage is spotty. Not very good coverage. But then, that's what we have come to expect of their coverage of southern IN.

The New Albanian said...

Three-way for Coffey, two-way for Price. Changes the odds both races, right?

Anonymous said...

I don't know. I'm not going to try and set the odds. I am looking at how and which precincts were taken by who in 1st District. Very telling.

I would also look at undervotes. Parties tend to ignore voters who don't want any of the candidates listed and simply don't vote that particular race. To me it's one of the most telling signs you may have. But, that's what I think.

I also support transparency, which is sadly lacking in this instance.

Why Mr. Baylor you should be supporting transparency in everything done with local government.

Like scanning your copy of who paid for your patio for starters.

Anonymous said...

I think we need to go back to the original staffing inside the City Clerk's office, before Wisman. Hopefully one of the candidates will make this their platform. Looking at Glotzbach for those answers.

Anonymous said...

She has my vote too. At least most of us know she won't be on twitter or blogging on taxpayers time.

If State supercedes local, what the hey? Why waste time on a meeting?

Anonymous said...

It is against the law to tamper with political signs, much less remove them. You will go to jail. They are now looking for an individual on a bicycle (the manager of the local business observed same). Now, the police are involved.

Anonymous said...

State doesn't supercede local. No one says it does. Local doesn't supercede state level, does it?

Anonymous said...

Yes, you will go to jail. During election time more candidates or enemies have been caught messing and damaging other candidates signs. If you are smart you better not mess with them there signs!

Local law only supercedes State under Home Rule.

Tribune 1-31-10

Floyd County Commissioner Steve Bush said Monday giving the parks department freedom to plot its own financial path is another way of streamlining local government.

“I like the idea of them being their own entity, I think it gives them ownership in what they’re doing with the parks,” he said.

England maintained it’s not a political issue and that he’s not opposed to the idea, just undecided. He added he still wants to work with the county to build a new public pool and the proposal of the parks board may be the financial answer needed to spring the idea into action.

“It might be more feasible if we do have a district,” he said.

Anonymous said...

So would they be the only one in Indiana like this??? Wonder why? BTW appointed boards are just as political as elected ones---maybe more so---it is much easier to buy a seat on one.

Anonymous said...

"Not Political"?! Who, what, - are they kidding? If so, who?

Anonymous said...

The city attorney doesn't read the local paper. That was an amazing revelation by Mr. Gibson. Wouldn't you think he might want to read the local paper of which he is the city attorney. And just maybe he might find out what our qualified well informed State Representative Ed Clere is doing. Good thing we have someone like Ed Clere representing us.

Anonymous said...

Mark Cassidy wrote:

For goodness sakes! You are the New Albany City Attorney and you don't read the New Albany paper?! Don't you care what goes on in the community you serve? It smacks of negligence or incompetence. The fact that you say you weren't informed on this issue is a perfect example of why you should get the Tribune! This can't be the only example of the benefits of staying informed on local events. What else have you missed to the detriment of community interests?

During the election, weren't you complaining about Mr. Clere's column in the Tribune and the fact you didn't have one? So, you read it when it suits your personal political ambitions, but not in service to your community and employer?

I'm a Democrat but I think you're a disgrace.

This parks bill is not a political toy, despite how some of the people commenting on here want to make it so. Ed Clere has been completely up front on this bill. It is completely transparent. This benefits the taxpayer and even the city. Where's the problem?

Anonymous said...

@ 3:43 -- I don't think Mark Cassidy made that statement. Unless he's become a lot more open-minded. LOLOL

As for sign stealing, this old guard thing we have around here that we expect sign stealing and buy more signs so that we can cover that loss is asinine. I've had so many people tell me that it's known that many people (and even who) steals signs. I'm so sick of it.

The Republicans make fun of us and say we're crooks because of it, and that makes me angry. Who says they're holier than thou?

On the other hand, I don't know of any Republican sign stealers, and Democrat signs don't tend to go missing, only Republican ones do.

Yes. It's pretty pathetic. I've been online today sort of catching up. Man, they've been burning up the internet with all their conniving and all of Shane's whining. I can't believe that guy. Why on earth would he try to defend himself about going up to Indianapolis to give his case a weak argument? Why on earth would he keep talking about it?

As for Marcey, I'm ashamed of Marcey. The dearth of enlightenment we've heard out of her these past several days truly surprises me. Someone on one of these comments said she lives in an alternative universe. I have to agree.

The list of candidates we've been presented gives me little confidence that things will change. There are between 2 - 4 that I think I can support. Otherwise, no dice.

In the meantime, certain candidates will endure bullying and sign stealing that ought to tell you right there that they're the candidates of choice.

Only Baylor is up for election, and this blog administrator has not attacked him. Well, England is but I think he's toast and he probably has enough criticism come it would take a book. So, you may want to get over it.

BTW, a bully pulpit is somewhere you someone running for office can not use this blog to attack another candidate. Public is allowed to make their statements.

in other words, two wrongs make a right if the "right" means you get to attack people with whom you disagree.

In the same way that Baylor gets on his blog and rails against public officials, there's no reason other private citizens shouldn't be able to do the same.

Having said that, I believe that gratuitous attacks are uncalled for. Baylor has set a precedent for this, but I don't think it's right.

Genuine complaints about bad behavior by public officials or candidates is fair enough, however.

Anonymous said...

I agree. I don't want to see candidates get on here and put each other down.

I also agree that Baylor and Wisman and Gibson have "set the bar." They've all three been out there spreading their venom everywhere. What's fair for them is fair for all.

Anonymous said...

Yes, I apologize. I did not mean to use the word attack. Criticism against sitting politicians, incumbents and criticism against candidates (if you don't like their platforms) by voters, not candidates.

Wisman and Gibson have set the bar in the past week. One may have their tweets protected, but you can still tell dates, times, and the gist of what's being said. ESPECIALLY on our time, our dime and probably our phones we are paying for AGAINST the public.

All of the tweets between Baylor, Randy Smith, Matt Lorch, Wisman, the Tribune, Shane, we could go on and on.

To me, once people watch these things to me it's is making sure England does not get back into office (of any kind). He hasn't a clue what's going on behind his back, and I can't say he would care. (Don't forget Matt Nash).
All day and all evening, tweet, tweet tweet.

Shane, did you come up with a false name for the internet so you can badmouth people? If you can't stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen.

Anonymous said...

Agreed, 6:03 and 6:07. I've heard that Mr. Padgett gets upset when people trespass. He also has video cameras facing most of his property, even property away from his main office. They really should watch it.

As for tweeters, they like to hear themselves talk. They are best ignored. As for Shane, I think he found a fake name all right, and he's used it today.

Anonymous said...

For the record, and so I don't have to re-write it, I'm posting something I put on Shirley Baird's blog. I'm through with blindly defending bad behavior of people just because they're a Democrat. Here's why:

Point taken, Shirley. But, for the record, I'll tell you how I view Shane Gibson in a little chronology.

As a local Democrat, I was excited to see someone young and with a cute young family file to run for State Representative. I had voted Bill Cochran out because it was time for him to go. I have to say, honestly, that I did not vote FOR Ed Clere, but against Cochran, so Clere got my vote.

When Gibson announced that he was running, I was excited to see a younger candidate, but was torn somewhat because Ed Clere really HAS done an excellent job at the statehouse. No more is it "business as usual" with our representative going to Indianapolis and none of us really the wiser as to what he's doing. They throw around that word "transparent." Clere really is transparent. So, I was challenged to consider whether I wanted to keep a Republican up there who is doing well, or vote according to party loyalty.

It ended up, I needed have no such worry. Gibson quickly showed his hand by telling me personally that Ed Clere closed schools when, in fact, he did not. He told me personally that Clere was "against our kids" and that he "voted for tolls," also completely false. Then came Gibson's big press conference, where he stood on the steps of the police station, surrounded by our mighty public servants in uniform, and said, and I quote, that Clere and his "Indianapolis buddies" had sent out fliers, one of which was "an outright LIE." I was further disenchanted when I started getting fliers--probably 25 to 30--making wild claims as to Clere's poor performance and, in the end, linking him to sex offenders.

I decided to vote for Clere, and my decision was sealed when I began to get the phone calls saying despicable things that I cannot repeat. That clinched it.

My husband talked with Gibson and Nick Stein (who managed his campaign), and they were BRAGGING that Gibson had "stopped ONE mailer." Yes, they said, they'd OK'd every single other one.

That confirms my vote.

This last charade in Indianapolis and since has only justified my position, and I am one proud Democrat who will ALWAYS vote for Ed Clere! After what he's put up with, he deserves a congressional medal or a Nobel prize!

Am I loyal to the Democratic Party? You bet! But NOT when I see someone in our party spreading lies and slandering one of our best public servants.

Anonymous said...

I agree, 6:38, and I might add that Clere's family is very adorable and that they, too (especially his wife) deserve a medal. I can't imagine how they put up with it. Hopefully, they've been blissfully unaware of all the goings-on this week. I've been told that Mrs. Clere is a vivacious and intellectual sort and I really hope this hasn't been in her radar while her husband has been up in Indy doing his job. The antics of a few have made us all (Democrats) look like morons.

Speaking of morons, how about those morons who aren't doing their jobs in Indianapolis, the ones who walked out? I heard that Stemler has stayed. Is that true?

What on earth are these jokers trying to teach our kids? That it's OK to take off and pout whenever we disagree? Once again, a HUMILIATING display, and it makes us (Democrats) look like MORONS!

Anonymous said...

I am also a Democrat. However someone will not get my vote just because they say they are Democrat. They better know the true facts, speak them, and don't twist words (really leery of attorneys). Don't like puppets.
God Bless America and Thank You to all the Military Members who keep America FREE!

Anonymous said...

Looks like Demos in Indy believe in 'cut and run' instead of standing firm and fighting. This is only the beginning. Afraid it will get worse. Hitting New Albany next? And where would YOU cut the budgets?

Anonymous said...

Eliminate, consolidate and new labor negotiations when time arises. I'd also have to raise fees to offset development costs to taxpayers. Sewer credits are at a 5 - 1 ratio; public pays the five developer pays the 1. Taxpayers need a break. Cell phones; cars; list goes on.

Anonymous said...

Did the Dems in Indy really leave the state? If so, I'm really furious! How on earth can they do that in good conscience? Don't they realize the statement they're making? It certainly is NOT a statement supporting the middle class. Instead, what they're saying is, "If I disagree with you, let me ignore you by leaving the meeting and acting like I have no duty to the taxpayer." Is there any way to fine these people? And what about the leader of the Democrats? Is it still Bauer? I'm amazed any Democrats are still stupid enough to follow him. He's horrible.

I assume our state representative and senator are still at the statehouse?

Anonymous said...

Anonymous said...

Amen!

Anonymous said...

Todd Bailey is nothing but a puppet for the mayor like Crabtree. Sherry Knight and Lawerence isn't much better.

Anonymous said...

Wow, Shirley's facebook page list removing birds from the park so people can fish as one of the reasons why she is running. She's been attending council meeting for two years and she thinks this is a major issue for the city? How about the city just supports a park district and let the district worry about the birds and the council work on real issues that are far more pressing to the citizens.

Has anyone heard of any other candidates that have laid out their platform yet?

Anonymous said...

I want to see Baylor's platform other than wearing a clown suit. His words not mine.

Anonymous said...

He can wear tar and feathers for all I care.

Anonymous said...

We are ALL anxious to hear "their" platforms, promises, ideas and their version of New Albany's reality.

I've heard of consolidation of departments and numerous boards, no deputy mayor, a stop measure for the police and fire to halt so much overtime until contract negotiations. This platform was advanced to me by Etheridge.

I really want to hear Gahan's ideas. It takes a bit of time to get information out to the voters, especially with a business if you are a candidate with a full time job and family to support.

I am not much for the candidate annointed by the outgoing official insofar as he plans to keep the deputy mayor, and other current administration officials. Voters want more than that. They want the cuts (needed so badly) made. Taxpayers are bleeding from their cuts. I smell it and hear it, from the voters.

Anonymous said...

I want solutions not promises or a statement of change either. Look what change got us.

Anonymous said...

May I be bold enough to ask what Change?

Anonymous said...

Didn't England promise change last time he ran? Turned out to be business as usual.

shirley baird said...

Actually I have been attending city council meetings for over 7 years.

I included the problems with Community Park because my husband brought this up after talking with many visitors to the park in the last few years. I agree that this is not a major issue to everyone in New Albany but it is an issue to many people who enjoy fishing there.

Anonymous said...

Shirley, what do you think about having a park district and having them handle the bird problem and the City devote their attention to major issues?

Anonymous said...

I think we need a park district. I can't believe all the ruckus we had last week over this. Imagine, it's the REPUBLICAN who wants to respect and protect our green space and the DEMOCRAT (in the persons of England and Gibson) who do not care about our green space. How ironic is THAT?

So, Shirley, how DO you feel about protecting the parks? You're a Democrat. I hope you're not going to let us down too.

Anonymous said...

dont look for an answer from baird or at least a definative one. she's likely to just straddle the park fence.

Anonymous said...

England's plans are to drain the ponds where people fish and put a "swim" park there. How do you feel about that one?

Anonymous said...

cant do that. shirley's husband needs a place to fish so they will have dinner.

Anonymous said...

it is not about the parks---it is about 20 million from shine toward the swim pool and most importantly---uncle ed will get the credit-----but not for a while now ---I do not think this legislation will be considered until the summer

Anonymous said...

If I recall, the way it is now with the Parks, is that the county gives money to the city and the city spends and pays the bills as it (Mayor) sees fit. Problem has been the number of parks in city and the number in the county and how much money do you (city decides?) spend on each. Now, do you think the 'city' pleased the county? Did anybody 'twist' the truth? County learned it had to watch the city like a hawk. Then did the city use the money only on parks and now does the county have enough money to 'run' the county without cutting back on the parks? Listen to the Parks folks who are speaking out! (Brave folks they are).

Anonymous said...

Yes, GO LETTY and SCOTT! I read their letters and they are absolutely right. Letty has been 100% behind Ed Clere as he's tried to stand up for our GREEN SPACE. It's amazing how they've twisted it. It's all over the money, of course, and for them to claim that "uncle Ed" will get all the credit is a little bizarre. Ed deserves a LOT of credit for putting up so graciously with Gibson and company. And they've been hideous in return.

There'll be credit for "uncle ed" all right, but he won't be bowing and asking for any credit. That's why Letty and so many others think so much of him and so do I.

Anonymous said...

Agreed, 5:27.

@1:21 Why would Shirley "refuse" to answer? Don't you think it's more likely she hasn't been on her blog to update it?

Look for the logical answer. It's time people started doing more of that.

I rode around town today checking out signs. Ethridge, Rosenbarger, Stemler and Timberlake have signs in the public thorough fare. So, Mr. City Operations Manager do the job we pay you to do, order the street department to pick up those signs.
If you pick up some signs out of yards that are legal you should enforce the laws on the illegal signs.

I believe that we need to save our parks and not let them be sold to settle debts or balance the budget. The only question I have is why was Floyd County singled out? Certainly Clark and Harrison Counties have parks that deserve to be protected also. If we have park districts they should be in every county in Indiana.
