Latest News?

So, is it true the Tribune will no longer be printing a Sunday newspaper and are merging operations down where ever they are (Alabama?)?  The City of New Albany will take a huge hit over Legals being published in the newspaper.  Some taxpayers have always maintained the Tribune didn't have enough readers in order for the City's Legals to be published (see laws and how many readers newspaper has to have), but I would think for sure now they won't.  The Council better schedule some big bucks in for the Courier Journal's Legal section!  Is this true about no Sunday edition anymore?

Is it true Larry Scharlow wants to run as an Independent for Mayor?  Are you kidding?  A perennial candidate and brings nothing to the table except to KEEP THE STATUS QUO as is - in other words, Gahan won't make a deal so desperate measures are needed.  Go Gahan!

Did it come as a surprise to anyone this big new development downtown (Mainland) can't be built without OUR money?  Anyone?  Maybe if Carl keeps talking enough, as he always does, someone will believe him.  Me?  I think Carl has run out of nickels.

But, these are just my thoughts.  Thanks for letting me share what I think (though it isn't worth much).

Gahan will be the next mayor not Scharlow.

I say we start are own newspaper. Since the Tribune doesn't print the truth anyway.

Yes, I think Malysz has run out of nickels. People know he's a joke and that he's done in this town.

Thank God, Jeff Gahan won't sell his soul to the devil. Amazing how, after YEARS of crap from a bunch of thugs, we're finally getting some real leaders to step up to try to run things. It's about time!

This deal with Mainland is a crock of crap and nothing but. I can't personally vote to keep this farce from happening, but we all need to lobby to keep our councilmen from voting for this latest HUGE scam of England's.

If I start on the Tribune, I'll go on forever. Let's just say they've done whatever they can to marginalize New Albany and they're revealing they're interested in nothing but the bottom line. Here's a news flash for them: there are a lot easier ways to make money than by having a newspaper. They might as well close down the paper entirely and go into a different business, say, the casino business.

Straight from the Retirement Fund of Alabama's local mouthpiece comes this:

http://newsandtribune.com/local/x1326418855/News-and-Tribune-adding-Monday-paper

It's all about being able to mail the paper, although they put the predictable spin on it.

When I called an complained against Matt Nash, I even faxed them several attack articles, they informed me they were moving corporate to another state (from Alabama).

Good news though, they have received several complaints be sure to call an voice your opinion.

Mr. Baylor, I read your twitter and you state that; 'Heine and Bristol' has NO knowledge of being open her at the Mainland project. Is that correct? Is this the same m
he/they tried in the 1990's?

Anonymous said...

I'm to the point of wondering if it even matters that we have a southern Indiana newspaper, such as it is. They've made themselves irrelevant.

Prediction: Gahan rehires Malysz.

Anonymous said...

Prediction: Gahan will not rehire Malysz.

To the 9:40 am poster, I remember the City trying something before and said certain businesses would become tenants and people called them up and it just wasn't true.

When this administration wants something they throw everything up against the wall to see if any of it sticks.

Anonymous said...

Before they said it would be the Bristol Bar and Grill. That's the name they threw all over the place, which wasn't true.

Anonymous said...

Prediction: Gahan will put in people of his own. In all kids of jobs.

The way I see it said...

1. I think Jeff Gahan is the best choice.

2. If I am not mistaken isn't this the same guy in the ninety's in with England who wanted to do this project before?

3. What does England have to gain?

4. Gibson and Carl better get all they can because after December they can kiss big salaries good-bye. And, they are both done in this town.

Good Riddens to all of them.

Anyone know who will make and how much commission will be make off these two bonds?

Anonymous said...

I'm not against the project just the financing. Someone is going to walk away with fat, full pockets.

Guess who?

Anonymous said...

Yeah, someone and his cronies. Easy to name, but why bother.

Anonymous said...

Scharlow for what? Mayor? You've got to be kidding?

Anonymous said...

I wish I was kidding. When the sewer bonds were "done", the City Attorney got a lot of the commission (said needed it for malpractice insurance) and then add in whichever company from Indy we always deal with, etc.

Hey Kitchentable Readers,

I found a black lab mix in front of my house this evening. He is very friendly and well cared for. His collar has the name Cash on it.

I live in the 5th District. From the sounds of it he has been on the street for about a week.

Tomorrow morning I will take him to our vet for a microchip scan. In the mean time if any of you know of someone missing Cash, please email me.

I'll bet that city attorney needs malpractice insurance. Lots of it. That guy is a joke.

U got that right said...

Look what he did with the Georgetown sewer deal. The citizens of New Albany got screwed out of $450,000. He ought to be in jail. Screw Gibson and that Rick Fox they both are incompendent a**holes and they both deserve to be behind bars, as in jail.

Anonymous said...

So true, so true.

Gibson needs to be updating his resume. Put us citizens down as a reference and he will never work again anywhere in the State of Indiana.

Where did he get his legal license? Walmart?

judge dismisses benedetti case!!!

Anonymous said...

Say what? On what grounds?

Anonymous said...

Amy, exactly how do people e-mail you? Your and Matt's blog doesn't have an e-mail. ?

Anonymous said...

There was a hung jury last time on Benedetti and the Prosecutor doesn't have any new evidence so they are not going to retry her.

Anonymous said...

It's only so appropriate the old Mosier Tannery was in the CJ today, about lack of funding to help renovate that end of town, rather than a boondoggle downtown.

Public's input into a master plan called for a boat ramp at the old 18th street dump (the area is so toxic there that's all we could see going in there).

Now, Al Goodman could use some help and we could use the elderly apartments idea.

But, the administration would make any money on that deal, but it would help New Albany over all, in my opinion.

About Benedetti, anyone else had refused a breathalyzer, they'd be in jail. Another day in who you blow.

Anonymous said...

Correction: Sentence should say the Administration WOULD NOT make any $.

I realize this might be off-topic, but every time I read an attack on State Rep. Clere, it makes me respect him even MORE! Whoever wrote that you cannot you cannot be a Democrat and love Ed Clere is totally mistaken. When you look at the local Democrat party, it makes you want to vomit. Our Dem chairman supported Stumler when he did not support the other candidates. Why should I change parties when I've been a lifelong Dem and I have the right to vote for whomever I choose (which is usually a Republican).

I am a lifelong Democrat and I PROUDLY SUPPORT ED CLERE!

As far as reading about Mrs. B, it came out of her own father's mouth that it has cost him $15,000 to get her out of it (the first trial) and that it was a political favor to bring in a certain judge so it would be dismissed. Personally, when every judge in NA believes she was drunk, you cannot convince me that she wasn't drunk.

So, Diane, you may have won the battle, but you haven't won the war. See you at the voting booth in November!

Go TONYE! I'm a Democrat and he's got MY vote!

We were leaving downtown just after 11 o'clock and just happened to drive past the Bank Street Swill House. Only noticed 2 people sitting at the bar. Perhaps the self-appointed Progressives have progressed elsewhere. R.I.P. (Rest in Piss-Brew, that is).

Anonymous said...

he stays open through the generosity of mamma's purse strings.

Anonymous said...

I'm for bridges even if we have to pay tolls. Don't WANT to pay tolls, but we NEED bridges.

And I don't support his attack of Grooms, Stemler and his favorite, Clere. This change didn't come about because of "pressure on the politicians." Van Hoy is wrong about that and so is stupid Baylor.

When are all these morons going to learn that this issue is not in the hands of the legislators, that they have no control over this, whatsoever?

And even if they did, notice how they say it's because of pressure exerted on them, not because they did the "right" thing.

But of course, this change didn't have anything to do with those guys.

A bunch of morons, Van Hoy and the Baylor gang.

So, no, I don't support Baylor's "tolls" message. It's stupid.

Until a month ago, we closed BSB on weekends at 11, because the late night trade is not what we ever wanted to do.

Conversely, we didn't have an empty seat, inside or outside, at about 9:00 p.m. on Friday.

For summer, we'll stick around until midnight, but overall, I am happy to cede the late night drinks trade to all those bars that stay open until 3:00 a.m.

But your concern for our business fortunes is touching, and I am moved -- straight to the tap for another Progressive Pint.

Congratulations go out to Hugh E. Bir and his 45th Anniversary of being in business yesterday. Hopefully more of New Albany's businesses may celebrate same!

Good job, Hughie. I know you like to make fun of Hughie's, New Albanian. Hopefully one day we can all agree there is enough of a market for all, no matter what your taste in beer is. We get more bees with honey than vinegar.

Anonymous said...

Doesn't anyone want to talk about the future of the old Mosier Tannery and how Al has been treated by this Administration?

Anonymous said...

What happened with the lost dog and an e-mail address?

The New Albanian said...

Actually, I don't make fun of him, and I agree with you. My references to the Luddite Bar and Grill were never intended to be construed as Hugh Bir's. What I actually HAVE said is that we'll never really have a craft beer revolution until we find a way into places like his. It's the only way we go from 10% yearly growth to 20%.

Anonymous said...

But, most of the clientele who frequent Hugh's, or Goodtimes, or even the Hitching Post really don't have the monies for the craft beer. I have been with friends who do go to Richo's for your craft beer. Maybe, too, it's an acquired kind of taste thing.

Fat Cat's, that use to be on Bardstown Road, had a good thing going on there (closed due to bad management). Their idea for someone to try every beer in the place and then get your name on the wall was a good marketing tool. Though, I may be comparing apples to oranges because their beer could have been all import. I don't remember. Maybe I drank too much.

I guess to each his own, huh?

Mr. Confidential, you style yourself an expert on blogging, but if you knew as much in the know as you claim, you'd acknowledge the fact that YK has a counter on here and can see it. You cannot.

You claim, Mr. C that you are a mask-free blog with a mask-free policy (where all are identified). In fact, you are the only one (you and your helpers) who knows the identity of every single person who comments on your blog. Everyone doesn't know who the people are. But you do. And you call that a higher bar for your blog.

Finally, the first rule of thumb for any blogger is this: A good blog does not have dozens of links (your has around 57). Don't you realize that people who click on your links are not necessarily reading what you write?

Probably more of the latter than the former. Most of our beers come in 20-oz pints, and $5 compares favorably to a couple of longnecks at $2 apiece. Our selling points are freshness, flavor and diversity. Given that for so long, beer in America meant only one thing in terms of style -- whereas in the wider world, it's always meant many things -- it's true that for many, it IS an acquired taste.

Fat Cat's, that use to be on Bardstown Road, had a good thing going on there (closed due to bad management) ... their beer could have been all import.

Indeed, a great place with an egalitarian vibe, and ahead of its time in terms of selection. The "name on the wall" surely is a good marketing tool. Most of the beer at Fat Cats was imported, because the new wave in America hadn't yet arrived in Louisville.

On this side of the river, Rocky's and Cut Rate Liquors were the places to explore the world of beer in the mid-1970's. Both of them owed their selections to one man: The late Ed Schuler of the old Nachand Beverage wholesaler in Jeff.

If I had a good picture of Ed, I'd put it up on the Public House wall.

The New Albanian said...

You'd acknowledge the fact that YK has a counter on here and can see it. You cannot.

That's entirely possible. NAC's counter is public because it furthers the interests of clarity as I view them. But to each his/her own.

Everyone doesn't know who the people are. But you do. And you call that a higher bar for your blog.

It certainly is a higher bar, if not the highest (something I never claimed). The known instances of a frequent user/commentator at my blog not eventually identifying himself or herself are quite few, so much so that I can only think of three, and none of them comment any longer.

The growing trend has been for the discussion to move to Facebook, where there is little issue with anonymity, and so when there's time, I'll be putting a blog portal at FB.

Finally, the first rule of thumb for any blogger is this: A good blog does not have dozens of links (your has around 57).

Blogging rules? Not really. Some blogs are nothing but links, others all pictures. It is what it is, as I've intended it; nothing more, nothing less.

Granted, when someone here or anywhere starts crticizing what I've written, it's possible that they're doing it without having read the piece to which they are referring, in which case it's their problem, not mine.

Reading the Tribune's article about the Council meeting last night educated me to the fact take home police cars are in their contract and them parking their take home cars is simply still a wish. Todd Bailey's Administration - isn't that his boss, England? Why would you have members of a rapid response team (SWAT) live that far out of town?

Why was New Chapel Fire Department called in for the gas line break today in New Albany? Was ours busy? Indiana-American sucks raw eggs. Do you know how many Veterans who can not believe the Germans now own our water? Has anyone ever thought about that irony of fact?

I only have more and more questions so I'll just shut up. Frigging unbelievable.

Why is River City Winery allowed to park its massive truck on Market street for days on end? There is a 24hr parking ordinance. Also, the ordinance probably prohibits a truck of that size from even parking on the streets. Lets get busy New Albany Police.

You have a few correct words, but they're placed in the wrong order.

Nasty is the nickname of a bartender I know.

The truck in question was never used for bread.

However, once upon a time it was indeed used for piss brew, i.e., Miller Lite. It was owned by a Miller distributorship. We cured it of piss brew by adaptively reusing it for craft beer, and the rest of it is history -- and a dullard's anonymity.

If you could have seen how Messer treated the President of the Preservation Assoc about the placement of a junkyard at a public hearing you would know how arrogant he is. Messer accused Mr. F of being nimby (not in my back yard) in not wanting the junk yard placed in a historical area. Mr. F told him he would like to think the city had enough property in other areas to put the junk yard and he sneered at him. I don't know why Messer even had a public meeting the way the public was treated. He's arrogant and ignorant. And, based on the findings of his own police merit board, a racist. That's how i feel.

No idea, but it goes along with so many other stupid things in New Albany. Stupid and disgusting.

I'm back said...

I haven't been on here in awhile, but I read through all the comments. It all started with the News and Tribune, and the changes in the days of publication.

I see that Fluffinstuff is, predictably, growling about it changing from a Tuesday through Sunday paper to a Monday through Saturday paper. Griping about this seems a bit non-progressive on his part. What's he afraid of--change?

Many newspapers print on a Monday-Saturday schedule. I actually kind of like it. Always thought it was odd not getting a paper on Monday.

I may get jumped all over for this, but I think that Shea Van Hoy is trying hard to create a balance. I'm not sure they've worked out all the kinks yet, but they do seem to be trying.

I do agree with those of you who say Matt Nash's columns aren't worth too much. He writes like he's in high school and his attack on Clere was very oddly penned. I'm with those of you who think he sort of put it together from, shall we say, sources. But it was predictable. Back when I used to read NA Confidential, I remember Baylor looking high and low for a writer to get on there to "present the other side" and refute Clere. I also remember when Baylor congratulated Nash on getting the weekly spot after Baylor and friends promoted him to "Coach K." The only surprise is that it took this long for Nash to cut right to the chase and attack Clere directly.

As for Jack Messer and his run for mayor as an independent, SURELY there's more to this than meets the eye. Why would an embattled, fallen police officer suddenly join the fray and risk raising the questions about his suitability for office? Why would he be a credible candidate after his inappropriate comments? It takes a lot of ego to think you have a chance with so much baggage. Either that, or a backer that's got a lot of expendable cash (or that has an agenda).

I just got back into town after a trip away and I'm amazed that the first thing I heard was that Baylor supports Messer. That certainly wasn't predictable, until I heard that another candidate, Jeff Gahan, referred to Baylor's sidekick, Gillenwater, as an idiot. I see now, why Baylor would fluff Messer.

But, Gahan's right. Gillenwater IS an idiot and that whole gang downtown needs to stop bellyaching and try JOINING the rest of the hard-working people in New Albany who are trying to make it a better place for all of us. Instead, that group just blabbers on and on, telling its own view of reality, hoping that their opinions will convince others that their truth is reality. They fight with everyone. They're negative every single day and they create an environment of toxicity that stifles true progress. What more can be said about them?

Yawn.

All this talk about England and Malysz is the same old, same old. Problem is, non of you have any proof. Without proof, your accusations are nothing but hot air. I'm not saying that things are above board, but where's the smoking gun?

To be sure, Malysz is always trying to position himself as a key player, and he's always going off on some tangent, but how do we KNOW he's helping England steal city money?

As for Gibson, he's so stupid he wouldn't know his hand is in the till if he saw it there.

England knows everything he's doing. He's slick and he apparently respects the first rule of the forest: Leave no trace. England knows, looks like Mattingly can no longer help, and the beat goes on and on and on...

If Doug England and the inner circle would work as hard to do the right things to make this place better for all as they do to come up with the next scheme to get whatever's in it for them, New Albany would be an AMAZING place!

JMHO

Baylor, it doesn't matter if my name is on it or not, the result is the same. I was told that Baylor has apparently supports Messer. This was gleaned from something someone read, I'm sure, on Facebook, or your blog, or on your Twitter account, because I didn't read it on here. But don't call me a liar just because I write on here that "the first thing I heard" upon my return from my trip was that you support Messer. It's what I heard. Absolutely true. And it would be true even if I put my name on it.

The difference between me and you is that you are willing to put your name to your lies. You say whatever you want about whomever you want, most of it opinion and whatever is YOUR perception about things that happen. You pass this off as truth, firm truth, by virtue of it having your name attached.

So, let's see...I don't lie, but write what happened; you say outright lies about people but put your name to everything you post.

Yes. There's a difference all right. A BIG difference.

11:58, I think someone read it on Randy Smith's Twitter to the effect if Messer supported Historic Preservation, he'd support him. Messer and Main Street Preservation had a big run in a few years back about a new city tow in lot.

When is the last day to file for an Independent? I've been hearing a rumor for 2 weeks now and don't even want to put it out there because it's so unreal. Thanks for the info up front.

Really?

In other words, the same as what you, yourself, did with the comment about me supporting Messer. You just heard someone say it, and decided to pass it along as fact -- until you were called out. Now you slop excuses across the landscape. That's a yawn.

Yet you're right about there being a big difference. If it turns out something I've written is mistaken, then I'm held to it in spades because I put my name to it. That's exactly as it should be.

You, on the other hand, needn't take responsibility for any of your frequent errors, insults and bashings. Big difference, indeed. Cowardice vs non-cowardice.

Now, go ahead a make a joke about fluffing, using the word (fluff) that I introduced you to, seeing as neither of you knew it before. How very LittlePeopleCreative of you.

I post my name with every comment just like you, The New Albanian, just look above. If you haven't figured it out yet idiot, my name is anonymous. My name is just as real as The new Albanian is.

Yeah, look at Baylor bragging about starting the word "fluff" to get out a nasty message with plenty of innuendo.

And, actually, Baylor (a.k.a. Fluffinstuff), that guy (or gal) is right. When you press your lies onto the public and get your sound bite out there, hoping people will repeat it, it doesn't matter if your name is on it or not. People repeat it because it sticks in people's heads.

That guy mentioning something he heard doesn't amount to a hill of beans. Everyone knows that if you support Messer, everyone can check for themselves.

That comes perilously close to the English language, but not quite. Did Yogi Berra say it?

And then there's this: http://cityofnewalbany.blogspot.com/2011/04/jeff-gahan-for-mayor-of-new-albany.html

Written before the primary, and before Messer announced as an Independent.

I remember when you've also written this: http://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=9097125&postID=7412562347978050446

You're a fickle sourpuss, Fluffinstuff.

Just my opinion said...

The only thing England knows what to do is cook the books not read them!

Great turn out for Jeff Gahan tonight. Baylor needs to stick that camera where the sun don't shine.

The New Albanian said...

Thanks, Kingster. Am I to interpret from this that you don't want me to be a Gahan for Mayor bedfellow?

Everyone knows you support Messer, even after your big fight with Smith.

You're all a bunch of morons.
